But Torak does not want to be a hero - frightened and alone, he must set out on a terrifying quest which will see him tricked and betrayed and every turn.
With his dying breath, Torak's father tells his son that he is the only one who can stop it - he must lead the bear to the mountain of the World Spirit, and beg the spirit's help to overcome it. Twelve-year-old Torak sees his father murdered by the bear. Then a dark, malevolent force conjures a demon contained in the body of a ferocious bear that will slay everything it sees - a demon determined to destroy the world. Thousands of years ago, the land is a dark forest, peopled by hunter-gatherers who know every tree and herb.
